Both Options Have Real Costs There was no fifth chamber. The Archives did not have one, or if it did, Keth'serai had not found it in four centuries of using the building, and she had stopped believing in things she couldn't locate. She led Tesiv back through the fourth room, through the predecessor's chamber, through the lineage room, back into the long internal passage where the marks of two thousand years of Leth read like a sentence written in a language that took a century to learn to parse. He was quiet through all of it. The quality of his quiet had changed across the morning. She had noted three distinct registers of his silence, each one carrying a different ambient register, and this one was the second she had encountered today, the one that appeared when Tesiv was running a very precise internal argument against a conclusion he had not yet accepted. She let him run it. She walked the passage and gave him room. He broke the silence at the midpoint of the passage, which was where, she had observed, he tended to break silences when they had been running long enough that they were no longer...
